A gig poster for the band Mohenjo. One of the themes I’d been asked to convey in the Mohenjo posters
had been the juxtaposition of ancient motifs with sci-fi or modern elements.

In February 2006, my wife Miriam and I visited Oaxaca and Mexico City in Mexico. It was my first trip
outside of the U.S.  While we were there, we visited the ruins of three or four Mixtec cities destroyed
by the Spanish. So began my fascination with the ancient culture.

A couple of images that started off in one of my journals. I combined them,
and added some color. I liked the juxtaposition of the slacker guy with the over
the top robot.

Before I did this poster, I was looking at a book of Mexican movie posters. I had also
recently bought a book about tin robots. The result was this illustration in watercolor,
ink and color pencil – completed in Photoshop.

Illustration inspired by the classic Kenneth Grahame children’s book.
Mr. Toad’s outfit in this illustration had been inspired by an article on the
latest “motoring fashions” in the August 1919 edition of Motor Life magazine -
of which I have a copy.
